I think it's great that this campaign has sparked an interest in young voters across the U.S. We all know how quickly the digital world works, but I don't think it really hits home until you hear the number of supporters a candidate can reach via the internet. Not only will this set the precedence for future campaigns, but the technology connection will likely draw in larger numbers as users begin to access "digital politics".
Connecting students to subjects through the use of the media will definitely peak interest. I don't think that the digital connection is the only contributing factor in rising interest in this campaign. I do, however, believe that the convenience of the digital world is fueling the fire and increasing interest among 18-34 year old voters. This information allows us, as future educators, to embrace this idea of digitally connecting materials and bringing them into our students' worlds. Media is a great tool to reach an audience that otherwise may be tuned out. I feel that bringing ideas into their world, where they spend a great deal of their time, can only result in increased student involvement and response.
I have become so dependent on technology now that I am almost ignorant at how much it does for me and the world. The first time I could vote was in 2004, and I was at NIU so the elections were really pushed on us. These debates have become so televised since than with being on tv, radio, and many websites its no surprise that more people are involved. It's such an amazing benefit to be able to email or post a blog about new ideas or events that are going on.
Technology has really improved daily communication today allowing everyone to have a voice without fear of back lash. This is a great tool to have in class for students who have a harder time expressing their thoughts and feelings in front of people. They can leave anonymous blogs online for others to read. It's also great because we can show our class different ways of looking at things and how to find answers quickly. You tube offers many clips to films that can be shown in class to maybe better explain a subject or book we are reading. It not only clarifies thoughts or ideas, but it can reinforce ideas and persuade students to further their thoughts.
I am curious about the true influence of technology with this election. This year's political events and those of the last four have garnered a huge amount of discussion. I think that the upcoming elections are more thought about by more people than say four or eight years ago. So I wonder if computer media recieves unfair credit for creating a political buzz. That said, of course politicians will use any means possible to help spread their name, message, and ideas for hope of votes. With computer media being widely accessible, easy to use, and inexpensive it would be foolhardy to ignore the possiblities.
